CREATE PRIVATE INDEXES

These instructions will explain how to create your own indexes in Bodhi6. Bodhi6 has a built-in private index builder. This index builder allows you to specify the securities you wish to track and then save them as an index. You can also choose to weight your securities by entering numbers into the Weight column. If you are making an index from the securities you own you could weight them according to the volume or total price they hold in your portfolio.
Bodhi6 creates the index by averaging the prices (open, high, low, close and volume) of your group of securities. This index is treated like any other security that comes directly from the Stock Exchange.

Private Indexes are created when Bodhi6 is exporting information. You can change what securities are used in any of your private indexes by simply changing the securities in the saved ticked list.

Creating Private Indexes
Private Indexes can be used as a valuable indication of your personal trading portfolio. Once created, you can use simple moving average techniques (included in your charting software) to see if your portfolio is in an up or down trend. You can compare your index against other ASX Indexes created from Market Capitalisation as opposed to price volatility. You can create indexes based on a watch list of securities or break down the ASX Industry sectors to smaller nominations.

To create a Private Index you need to tick the securities you want to be part of your index then save the ticked list ensuring that you have selected Create Index. Once saved you can clear the ticked selection - you are not required to keep these securities ticked. In fact, there is no requirement to update any of these securities.
NOTE: If you want to change your history you will need to re-import/export the updated index.

For this tutorial we will create a private index based on some Banking securities trading on the Australian Securities Exchange.
  1. Open Bodhi6 and click on the Configure button.

    Bodhi6: Click Configure

  2. The Configuration screen will appear. In the Active tab, double-click on ASX: Australian Securities Exchange then Equity to open the list of Equities trading on the ASX.

Bodhi6: Australian Securities Exchange - Equities

This displays the entire list of the Australian Securities Exchange's Equities. They are sorted alphabetically by
ASX CodeA unique code allocated to each company trading on the Australian Securities Exchange..

  3. Tick the box next to these Bank securities: ANZ; BEN; BOQ; CBA; NAB and WBC. When finished, the Ticked section of the screen should display the number 6.

  4. From the menu, click on Tick then Save. The Save Tick List box will appear.

Bodhi6: Save Tick list and create Index

Enter a name in the drop-down box (i.e. Banks) and tick the Create Custom Index box. Then exit the box by clicking on the red [x] button.
  5. The Weightings screen will now appear. This screen displays the list of symbols you selected with the weighting set to 1.

    Bodhi6: Index Weightings

If you leave the weighting set to 1, Bodhi6 will weight your securities evenly. For the sake of this tutorial we will weight our Banks according to the percentage they hold in value in our portfolio.
  6. To change these values, double-click the corresponding cell and enter the following: ANZ = 20 ; BEN = 5 ; BOQ = 10 ; CBA = 15 ; NAB = 40 ; WBC = 10.

    Bodhi6: Edit Weighting

When you have entered all the values exit the Edit Weight screen by clicking the [x] button.
Note: You can change the weighting at any time by loading the list then resaving it.
  7. If you do not have any Equities selected (ie. Bundle = none/Ticked = 0), tick a symbol (your new index will not appear until after Catchup).
  8. Put your Received and Updated dates back to the date you want to start exporting data for this index.
Note: History for Bodhi6 is available for download for the past 6-months. More data is available for purchase from our Bodhi History software.
  9. To ensure that your new index will display in the list, select Auxiliary from the View menu (it will have a tick next to it when selected).

    Bodhi6: Selecting Auxiliary

  10. Exit the Equity screen by clicking the [x] button.
  11. Exit the Configuration screen by clicking the [x] button.
  12. Connect to the Internet and click Catchup. When finished, go back into your Equities list. Your new index will be at the top of the list with a symbol starting with an exclamation mark (!) followed by the letters CI (Custom Index).
